Personalizing the Political: Poetry as an Act of Resistance

Contrary to popular belief, poetry does not need to be about overtly political subjects in order to challenge the status quo. The very act of writing a poem is a form of resistance in itself, especially when we speak our truths, sometimes “telling it slant,” as Emily Dickinson famously put it. In this safe, supportive, process-oriented workshop, we will read examples of poems that disrupt and engage, that resist easy answers. Using a variety of generative techniques, we will focus on writing poems that are courageous, risk-taking, and subversive in content and/or form. Whether you are new to poetry or a seasoned poet looking for new ways to approach a poem, this workshop is for you.
